The Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) was established over 25 years ago in Burketown to represent the rights and interests of Traditional Owners. Our members are drawn from the nine language groups whose traditional lands and waters are located in the in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. As the recognised Native Title Service Body for the southern Gulf region, the CLCAC performs statutory functions in accordance with the provisions of the Native Title Act 1993. An elected Board determines the Organisation’s priorities and monitors the progress of native title applications and oversees operational activities and general governance.

The CLCAC supports ranger programs at Burketown and Normanton and currently employs approximately 35 full time staff across four units. We are seeking a Human Resources and OH&S Compliance Officer to join our Corporate Services Unit to provide human resources, payroll and occupational health and safety management support to the CLCAC Corporate Services Manager, Regional Coordinators and the CEO.

The Human Resources and OH&S Compliance Officer will be responsible for:

  • Providing assistance with recruitment process, including advertising vacancies, processing applications and drafting employment contracts;
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of CLCAC’s training plans;
  • Providing assistance to the Corporate Services Manager, CEO and Regional Coordinators on human resources related matters;
  • Processing fortnightly payroll for all CLCAC employees and responding to staff in relation to payroll and entitlement queries;
  • Maintaining salary sacrifice and deductions schedules and undertaking reconciliations on a regular basis to ensure accuracy of schedules;
  • Reviewing and updating the CLCAC’s Workplace Health and Safety Plan in accordance with relevant legislation; and
  • Assist with the review of CLCAC’s Policies and Procedures and ensuring version control of all documents.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS

The position is a full-time position based in our Cairns office. This role will involve some travel to our Regional Offices located in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria region.

  • Salary to be negotiated depending on skills and experience.

  • Leave entitlements will include 5 weeks annual leave.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Experience with and a good understanding of payroll software;
  • Possess a good understanding of the Fair Work Act and modern award, with a strong ability to research various aspects of the act as required;
  • Possess good attention to detail and problem solving skills;
  • Possess excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with Indigenous people, managers and key stakeholders in a sensitive and confidential manner;
  • Demonstrated organisational skills and the ability to prioritise to meet impending deadlines and recurring priorities.

Ten Gangalidda and Garawa Rangers recently completed another round of shorebird identification training with renowned ornithologist (bird expert) Roger Jaensch.  The training session also included a survey of known bird roosts found between the Leichhardt and Albert River mouths.  Though conditions were extremely hot and the going was tough on our team, several thousand birds were observed roosting on the intertidal flats between the river mouths.  Such data adds to the recent nomination of Tarrant (located immediate

CLCAC Rangers completed the last round of training required to complete their Certificate II in Remote Crocodile Management on 4 March, in an intensive two week training program that included weekend work.  This round of training focused on nest surveys and egg incubation.
